Morning Motivator - Don't Party Too Quickly

"Don't boast about projects in progress. Celebrate their completion."
- unknown

Have you ever known someone that is most EXCITED right before they finish something? Have you ever noticed what happens when that same person is UNABLE to deliver the final completion?

Often, we ANTICIPATE the next steps of any process and EXPECT there will rarely be hiccups along the way. Reality says that anxiety surrounding COMMITTMENT is at its highest IMMEDIATELY before signing. So as professionals, why would we CELEBRATE any achievement at any time other than AFTER it is complete?

As OPTIMISTIC people, we must keep our FOCUS on seeing actions through to their completion. As Gen X or Gen Y'ers, we must show even GREATER ability, as our natural tendency is to leave something hanging once we feel it is a "done deal."

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
To remain FOCUSED requires a great deal of energy. To best HARNESS your energies, take time to step back, catch your breath and charge through...

When you ALLOW yourself a "time out" to focus IN your business, not just ON it... You find that you will be more PRECISE in your actions and more likely to COMPLETE them.

Now finish your work, so you can go CELEBRATE!!

Cheers,
Zach

Morning Motivator - A Lesson in Stress Management

"If you think you're under pressure, you're probably not, because when you really are, you don't even have time to think about it."
-Ron de Jonge

I appreciate all the submissions lately... GREAT WORK! I want to thank Nancy Kimbrough for this one... thanks Nanee!

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, 'How heavy is this glass of water?' Answers called out ranged from 8oz. To 20oz.

The lecturer replied, 'The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it.'

If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.

He continued, 'And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on. As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden."

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work/life down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. Relax; pick them up later after you've rested.

You will find you are much stronger than you ever thought you were... just give yourself a chance to prove it!

Cheers,
Zach

Morning Motivator – Who Is Shaping Your Future?

"Mentor: Someone whose hindsight can become your foresight"
-Unknown

American Idol. Professional sports. Politicians. Teachers. All may be noted as a "mentor." Who is YOUR mentor? Do you even UNDERSTAND the value of a mentor?

As a Young Professional and a leader in my local community, I have found the value of MENTORSHIP at an early age. I have LEARNED that the above quote is the true "short track" to success. Most interesting is how many "established" professionals are EXCITED to mentor someone – regardless of age. Let me explain the value I have found in a MENTOR…

For me, the GREATEST challenges I face typically come down to a struggle between my head and my heart. It's a DECISION about what is "right" and what is "right for my people" (not always the same thing). By having access to a mentor, I am able to LEVERAGE their experiences and expertise in similar situations. This relationship allows for LEARNING and OBJECTIVITY without having to "go through it" to understand it. By having someone that you can look to for GUIDANCE, you are better able to lead and execute from your leadership role.

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
When seeking mentorship, you want to be mindful of a few critical QUALIFIERS:

1. Does this person have EXCEPTIONAL character?
2. Is this person an EXPERT in their field?
3. Do they have VALUES you share and respect?
4. Are they "SUCCESSFUL" per YOUR definition of success?
5. Are they accessible?
6. Are YOU willing to make the appropriate SACRIFICES (time, money, effort) in order to earn the right to be mentored?
7. Are you COMFORTABLE to ask for mentorship from that person?
8. What the HECK are you waiting for..? Go ASK them!

Having a mentor is a GREAT advantage. When you have someone that you are able to look to, speak to and be challenged by… you have put your DEVELOPMENT into hyper-drive.

Special thanks to my unknowing mentor, Sonny. You have inspired today's Morning Motivator. When I grow up… I want to be just like you.

Cheers,
Zach

Morning Motivator – Don’t Take Away People’s Belief...

It may not be "morning" but is a motivator... My regrets for the distribution challenge this am. Enjoy!

"Beware how you take away hope from another human being."
-Oliver Wendell Holmes

What causes most people to QUIT an activity? Why do we CEASE relationships? Why do people LEAVE their jobs? Often, it is the lack of BELIEF that they can change their situation.

As leaders, we must EXAMINE the ways in which we motivate people. Are we the BROW beating manager that expects LOYALTY, DISCIPLINE and COMMITMENT without question? Are we the EASY GOING, "Do what you want" manager that allows our people to come and go as they please? Where is the BEST solution? Should I be harder or softer? Should I MICRO manage or let loose?

When you take away a person's INVESTMENT into their role, you must understand you are also taking away their BELIEF that they can make a difference. Most perceived APATHY from managers is a simple lack of understanding that the employee LACKS vision, purpose and a sense of ability in their role. You want them to DO and BE more? Give them a specific role that ALLOWS them to make a noticeable DIFFERENCE in the operations of the business.

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
Take the time to ASK your people what they want to BECOME, how they see themselves CONTRIBUTING and the ways in which they feel they are best able to EXECUTE. Ask them to define their own GOALS and then match them with yours.

You should be able to find a common ground and in the event that there are some VARIANCES in your goals, be willing to GIVE and TAKE. NEGOTIATE your most critical goals on conditional acceptance of their most sought after goal.

When you learn to MOTIVATE your people with their own ideas… you will find their EFFORTS, PRODUCTIVITY and RESULTS will all increase!

Cheers,
Zach

Morning Motivator - Want More? Do More!

"The definition of insanity: executing the same actions and expecting different results."
- unknown

Special thanks again to my good friend, Josh Anderson. This is an excellent perspective...

If you wish to achieve more, then attempt more. Push yourself
beyond what you already know you can do.

Get out of the rut of going through the same motions and
ending up with the same results. Put some additional time,
energy, thought and creativity into your actions.

Take on challenges that make you a little bit uncomfortable.
Stretch your abilities and watch them grow.

Decide to reach higher and you'll find many new ways to move
higher. Raise your expectations and you'll improve your
performance.

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
Keep on learning, keep on growing, and keep on venturing
beyond what you already know. Give yourself the gift of
increasingly ambitious goals.

Enjoy and appreciate how far you've already come. Then jump
back in and make it even better.

Thanks again Josh!! Great work.

Cheers,
Zach
