Morning Motivator - Why Have Goals?

Special thanks to one of my best supporters, friends and my personal real estate agent, Josh Anderson for this blog by Seth Godin (www.sethgodin.typepad.com/). Only rarely will I republish others original work, but I loved this.

"Having goals is a pain in the neck."
- Seth Godin

If you don't have a goal (a corporate goal, a market share goal, a personal career goal, an athletic goal...) then you can just do your best. You can take what comes. You can reprioritize on a regular basis. If you don't have a goal, you never have to worry about missing it. If you don't have a goal you don't need nearly as many excuses, either.

Not having a goal lets you make a ruckus, or have more fun, or spend time doing what matters right now, which is, after all, the moment in which you are living.

The thing about goals is that living without them is a lot more fun, in the short run.

(2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP)
It seems to me, though, that the people who get things done, who lead, who grow and who make an impact... those people have goals.

Cheers,
Zach

Morning Motivator - How's Your Resolution?

"May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions."
– Joey Adams, comedian (1911-1999)

Funny thing about New Years Resolutions, most are BUSTED already. No worries though!! Now, you KNOW why they don't work...

I have discussed RESOLUTIONS a lot over the past week. Many points have been made about making MINOR adjustments to your behavior, rather than major ones. This also relates to your ATTITUDE.

When you hit the HURDLES of the new year - not getting that raise or gaining weight instead of losing it - your ATTITUDE will be the key determinant of how DIFFICULT it will be to rebound. If you DWELL on the "tragedy" (tongue in cheek), then expect it will linger for quite some time. If you look at it as a CHALLENGE, you will likely see a behavior change and the success you are seeking.

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
One of the BEST ways to manage your attitude is by writing down your feelings and next actions.

By creating a PHYSICAL reality to your situation and actions, you are more capable of RATIONAL considerations. This will prove most helpful in VERY challenging situations.

It only takes 5 mins and may be the best time you spend today!

Cheers,
Zach

Morning Motivator - The Key to a Better Life

"The key to a better life: Complain less, appreciate more. Whine less, laugh more. Talk less, listen more. Want less, give more. Hate less, love more. Scold less, praise more. Fear less, hope more."
– Michael Josephson

What is the "American Dream?". Some will say home ownership, some say "opportunity" and others say freedom of CHOICE. But what is the REAL dream?

In my discussions with people, most desire a good job, great friends and most importantly, TIME to search out their passions. How do we get there? You COULD... quit your job, braid hair on an island beach and chase your DREAMS from there. You COULD win the lottery (good luck!) Or... you COULD learn how to work through others to get what you want by giving them what THEY want.

This poses a GREAT question - WHAT do people around you want? Do you know? Have you ever taken the TIME to ask?

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
When you DECIDE to become a servant of others and ASSIST in the achievement of THEIR goals, you will find that the tables inevitably turn in your favor. Have you ever GIVEN of yourself without expectation of "payback?" Do you remember what OCCURRED as a result?

To better ATTAIN your dreams, start asking people about THEIRS. Seek ways to CONNECT them to others that can help move their passions more rapidly. Discover common interests that allow you to SHARE in efforts of development or growth. COMMIT yourself to helping ONE person this week ADVANCE their goals... and you will find the LAW OF ATTRACTION will kick in to bring you assistance in your life too!

Cheers,
Zach

Morning Motivator - Are You a Jedi Master?

"Leadership must be earned by mastering a defined set of skills and by working with others to achieve common goals."
- David Cottrell

Ok, ok... The title is CHEESY, but I did get your attention. There is a REAL question here though. The question being: "how do I become successful?"

Some people are FORTUNATE enough to work in a "family" business where they have been trained since birth. Others are VISIONARY enough at a young age to know a greater education, such as medical or law school. For the rest of us, especially me, we better MASTER something to be successful. What can you master though?

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
To MASTER something is to be better than the majority of others. It does not mean the ABSOLUTE best, per se, rather better than the common person.

How do you become a master?

By CAREFULLY selecting a match of your passions and natural talents in a marketable role, coupled with extensive experience (learning by doing) and education (self learning by reading).

Once you become the MASTER of your skill, you will find that your success will follow and catch you soon after!

Cheers,
Zach

Morning Motivator - Do You Have The Will Power?

"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will."
- Vincent J. Lombardi

In the New Year, most of us will give our BEST efforts to keep our New Year's Resolutions. Many people have ALREADY broken some. Almost ALL of us will NOT keep them... why?

Primarily, we set our resolutions around the person we want to BECOME with little recognition of the person we are today. We ESTABLISH goals that are so out of character from our current behavior patterns that it is near IMPOSSIBLE to make such drastic changes and expect them to stick.

Additionally, we set our goals around AREAS of our life that we lack the most will power in. We tell ourselves we WON'T eat anymore sweets, when we are used to having a bowl of ice cream after dinner every day. We CONVINCE ourselves we will wake up at 5am to run and read, since we failed to do well at that all last year, although we have CONSISTENTLY risen at 6:30am for years. What will help us better ACHIEVE our goals in this new year..?

2 DEGREE SUCCESS STEP:
... Will power and strategic planning! By setting goals that are SIMPLE, SMALL and MANAGEABLE - you will find the necessary will power to execute and succeed!

When you change your goals from, "I want to get up at 5am to run and read EVERY DAY" to "I WILL get up at 6am, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday to read OR run." This is much more manageable and achievable. Once you are able to successfully manage this goal for 90 days... up the ante! Now do it daily!

All of your goals can be chunked down into manageable executables. Don't feel like you have to be the NEW, PERFECT version of yourself today. You must take steps and walk slowly to make sure you stay on the path. Remember, the best way to eat an ELEPHANT is slowly and one bite at a time.

Cheers,
Zach
